Earlier this week we posted about Mars new and delicious looking chocolate and caramel, Mars bar flavored protein powder. Since it got so much attention we figured we’d share details on one of the company’s more recently released protein products with the Bounty Protein Bar.
If you’re unfamiliar with the regular Bounty candy bar from Mars, it is essentially a milk chocolate coated bar with a creamy coconut filling. Much like with the Snickers and Mars protein bars, the new Bounty Protein Bar tries to bring that original Bounty experience to the fitness world with less sugar and a lot more protein.
The macros on the still relatively new Mars Bounty Protein Bar are 19g of protein, 17.3g of carbohydrates with 8.5g of that sugar, and 5.7g of fat (4g saturated), for an alright total of 192 calories. It is also worth pointing out that this one does use hydrolyzed collagen as a big source of protein, just like the Snickers and Mars protein bars, as well as milk and whey protein concentrate.
For those that are a little unsure about what hydrolyzed collagen is, it’s essentially a protein made from the collagen found in animal bone, skin, and connective tissue. That is of course very different from your typical whey protein which is a byproduct of cheese, and what a lot of brands use as the main or only source of protein in their bars.
The other thing with hydrolyzed collagen is that the balance of amino acids making up its protein aren’t the same as they are in whey protein. Usually hydrolyzed collagen is mostly made up of the non-essential amino acids proline, glycine, and glutamine, whereas whey protein packs a good amount of BCAAs which are the three muscle building aminos.
At the end of the day it is up to you on what you put in your mouth, so if you’re not a fan of hydrolyzed collagen then maybe the Mars line of proteins bars isn’t for you. If however you don’t really care and are just all for taste and macros, then you might want to go shopping for the 200 calories and under Mars, Snickers, and Bounty protein bars.
