We recently had the good fortune of visiting the headquarters of Barebells in Stockholm, Sweden, the brand behind the category-leading Barebells Protein Bar. We consider it to be the best protein bar in the world by far, and that doesn’t look like it’s changing anytime soon with the constant innovation and creativity it pushes out. During our visit, we learned an interesting fact that we thought was worth passing on, similar to other fun facts we’ve shared from the industry.
While Barebells goes hand in hand with the protein bar category, again, being responsible for the best-tasting competitor on the planet, that is not where it actually started. We have seen many other innovations from the brand over the years, like its legendary protein ice cream bars, protein-packed spread, and even bags of crispy protein pieces. Despite all of that, the very first innovation from the international name was Barebells Protein Pudding.

The Swedish powerhouse did originally have a pot of deliciously sweet and smooth protein pudding, providing 20g of protein in a 200g pot alongside low carbohydrates around 9g, all of that sugar, about 3g of fat, and calories in the 140s. It was an incredibly lean protein snack, even more so than the now incomparable Barebells Protein Bar, and it came in five tasty flavors with Double Chocolate, Creamy Vanilla, Pear & Vanilla, Strawberry Supreme, and Coconut Cream.
There are now quite a few protein puddings on the market in Sweden, but as far as we know, the Barebells Protein Pudding was one of the first and very likely inspired many others to follow suit. Clearly, the Swedish innovator eventually discontinued its pudding and focused heavily on the bars, which was also what happened to its selection of ice cream. One day, Barebells may return to the format, and as good as the original was, we imagine it’ll be able to improve on that.
