Grenade Energy Review: Sweet and tart, but still a solid first outing

Grenade Energy is the first-ever energy drink from the UK brand Grenade coming in a bright and colorful can packed with vitamins, electrolytes, BCAAs, caffeine for energy, and zero calories. Being big fans of all of the brand’s other products, we’re excited to get our hands on the product today and find out first hand how it compares to the competition.

Grenade’s entry into the energy drink market is quite the functional beverage, as it comes with a little more than just caffeine, and all of its ingredients are transparently dosed. Each can of Grenade Energy includes a blend of electrolytes for hydration, 1.5g of BCAAs, 250mg of taurine, half a gram of n-acetyl-l-tyrosine, and 155mg of natural caffeine.

Review

The only description we’ve seen from Grenade regarding the taste of its energy drink is that it’s a refreshing fruit flavor, so going into this, we didn’t know entirely what we were going to get. Right from the first sip, it is clear, the brand’s few words about the taste are spot on, as it is a sweet and somewhat tangy flavor, although it does have a bit of an aftertaste.

It is tough to pinpoint the flavor of Grenade Energy down to just one exact fruit; it is more of a berry heavy fruit punch concoction that makes that berry dominance known as soon as it touches your mouth. As you drink away at the energy-boosting beverage, the flavor does develop and change, losing that sweetness, and leaving you with more of a tart taste.

The tangy aftertaste does take a few sips to get used to, but once you’re a quarter or so through, you won’t mind it as much, and it’s a lot easier to enjoy. That extra punch on top of the sweet fruity side of Grenade Energy reminds us of a lot of other European energy drinks with a mix of sweet and a touch of tart such as NOCCO’s flagship beverage and Pandy’s energy drink.

Summary

For us, Grenade Energy is not quite as competition killing as its Carb Killa Protein Bar and various other treats and snacks, but it’s certainly a solid first outing. Knowing the functional brand, it’s likely to expand on the product with more flavors and hopefully fine-tune its recipe to become a strong player in both the protein bar and energy drink game.
