Last year the Australian brand Body Science introduced its High Protein Low Carb Bar, which we have seen quite a bit of good feedback on. The protein bar also looks delicious in promotional material; however, that doesn’t always translate to actually tasting good. Based on the feedback and images, we decided to pick up three of the product’s flavors for review with Triple Choc, Cookies & Cream, and Hazelnut Praline.
BSc Low Carb Bar macros
The macros behind the Australian Body Science Low Carb Bar stay true to its name with around 19g of protein per bar, between 2.7g to 4g of carbohydrates, around 5 to 6g of fat, and 206 or 210 calories depending on the flavor. The nutrition is similar to a lot of the top competitors in the category such as Grenade’s Carb Killa with 20g of protein for between 210 to 220 calories.
Triple Choc
Our least favorite of the three Body Science Low Carb Bars we purchased is Triple Choc, which we initially thought would be the best purely based on its name. While the bar does look good from the outside, that’s not the case once you bite in.
The outer layer doesn’t welcome you with any kind of sweet chocolate taste as you may think based on it looking like chocolate. After that, you get its lightly flavored gooey layer that is more tough and chewy than flavorsome, then lastly is its doughy and lingering main body. Despite being named Triple Choc, the whole combination doesn’t scream chocolate, more of an extremely light caramel with a pinch of chocolate.
Cookies & Cream
The next of our three Body Science Low Carb Bars is Cookies & Cream. It features the same thin outer layer, a gooey top, and tough main body. Unlike Triple Choc, however, Cookies & Cream has a taste that slightly resembles its title. It doesn’t really have much of a cookies side to it, mostly cream, giving it a touch of milky cream sweetness.
Hazelnut Praline
The last Low Carb Bar we have is Hazelnut Praline, that stands out from the Triple Choc much like Cookies & Cream by having an extra bit of sweetness to it. The thing that saves it is its addition of what tastes like actual hazelnuts. The feature makes the bar a much more exciting experience, but without anything else backing that up, it does feel a little plain.
Not overly competitive
Overall the Body Science Low Carb Bar isn’t as much of a treat as we’re used to, it mostly feels quite dated, like a bar that would’ve made do a few years ago. In today’s market though with the likes of Grenade’s Carb Killa, ProSupps’ MyBar, and PhD’s Smart Bar, something like this has trouble comparing.
Despite the protein bar lacking in a lot of areas, such as a thin, seemingly chocolate outer, a not so caramel gooey layer, and a doughy middle. It does have a couple of things worth highlighting such as the Cookies & Cream’s cream and Hazelnut’s sweet hazelnut flavor. Unfortunately, they’re not enough to call it a competitive protein bar, or even allow it to come close to any of those mentioned above.
