Animal Whey review: Chocolate Chocolate Chip the best we’ve had in a long time

animal whey review

Not too long after Animal launched Animal Whey we managed to get a hold of all three original flavors and gave them a go. Chocolate, Cookies & Cream and Vanilla all proved to about as normal as you’d expect, which only made sense as the brand does promote the supplement as “No game, no tricks, no hype. Just protein done right.” While initially we thought the traditional theme would continue for future Animal Whey flavors, we immediately realized that wasn’t the case when Chocolate Chocolate Chip was introduced.

Since Animal’s double chocolate recipe arrived we’ve seen the brand put together a number of other interesting sounding flavors, including Frosted Cinnamon Bun and the limited edition Frank’s Birthday Cake. It is in fact those two as well as Chocolate Chocolate Chip that we recently got a hold of to bring you today’s Animal Whey review. Unlike the first three we definitely feel these three are a lot more creative and well worth sharing our opinion on.

Frank’s Birthday Cake exactly what you’d expect

As per usual we’re going to start with our least favorite of the three, which is Frank’s Birthday Cake. Unlike the other two Animal Wheys, Birthday Cake is actually no longer available, however we do feel it deserves a mention as it does show how far the brand’s flavoring skills stretch. Basically the reason we’re saying this one is our least favorite of the three is purely because it’s fairly straightforward and for us almost comes off as a gourmet vanilla, like a lot of Birthday Cake proteins. It’s a very creamy kind of taste that has that mild birthday cake tang to it, so really a lot like the originals by being exactly what you’d expect.

Frosted Cinnamon Bun one of the good ones

Next we have Frosted Cinnamon Bun, a flavor or type of flavor that over the past couple of years has been done a lot. In saying that not many companies have done it well, in fact most in our experience have disappointed. Animal’s effort is an exception to that and is very impressive, packing the perfect amount of flavor that lasts whether you like your shake concentrated and thick or diluted and thin.

Animal Whey’s cinnamon sweetness is something that you’ll notice right from the first sip, and only want to drink more of. Frosted Cinnamon Bun is one of those rare flavors that actually tastes as good, if not better than it smells, and by that we mean its scent is enough to make you hungry.

Chocolate Chocolate Chip, king of the chocolates

Last but certainly not least is quite possibly the best chocolate protein we’ve had in an extremely long time. Generally when we go into protein reviews we hope for a good chocolate as out of the two or three usuals, chocolate is something we always enjoy and can rely on. That being said lately a lot of brands seem to have won us over with surprisingly good vanillas, and on the odd occasion cookies. Animal’s Chocolate Chocolate Chip however is not only better than the other two in today’s Animal Whey review, as well as the three originals. But it’s pretty much our new favorite chocolate, which is an extremely strong statement as there are a lot of chocolates out there.

The first thing Chocolate Chocolate Chip sells you on is its seemingly straightforward milk chocolate taste. It’s a heavy but sweet flavor that remains consistent right throughout drinking it, something a lot of proteins have trouble with. If we had to compare the chocolate to something, believe it or not it’d probably be cocoa powder. It has that rich sweetness to it that’s not heavy like a milkshake, more like a milky hot chocolate.

One more thing that we just have to mention is that there are actual chocolate chips in Chocolate Chocolate Chip, adding a bit of crunch at the end of your shake unless you’ve left it sitting. While it may sound obvious based on the title, after trying Animal Whey’s regular chocolate we really didn’t know what to expect. As it turns out the double chocolate flavor is absolutely incredible, leaving the original chocolate in the dust along with all the other chocolates we’ve tried in the last year or so.

Animal proves it can creatively flavor

After sampling Animal’s first three we weren’t overly excited about doing an Animal Whey review on three different flavors, despite how good they sounded. While Frank’s Birthday Cake did continue the product’s typically flavored theme, Frosted Cinnamon Bun and Chocolate Chocolate Chip quickly changed our minds and have now made us big fans of the supplement. Chocolate Chocolate Chip is of the course the real star in this story as it is one we can not say enough about. From here we’re definitely looking forward to whatever else Animal puts together for its protein powder, and can only hope its adds Chocolate Chocolate Chip to its 10lb menu sometime soon.
