When Grenade first moved into the high protein snack business we were lucky enough to try their Reload: Protein Flapjack and were more than impressed. Flapjacks not being a thing you’ll see too often in the US as far as high protein snacks go, but a delicious way to get 19g of protein nonetheless. Last month Grenade returned to the convenient category with yet another supplement, although this time round the brand were going for something a little kinder on the carbohydrates. The name of the product is Carb Killa, which is really Grenade’s first protein bar since Reload is a flapjack. Like when Reload was released, we got a hold of the latest from Grenade and have here for you today our Carb Killa review.
The big catch with Grenade’s original high protein snack the Reload flapjack, is the fact that it is indeed a flapjack. It still tastes great but isn’t the usual chocolate coated crave killing treat you may be used to. The supplement also packs a rather high calorie count at 304 to just 19g of protein, so it isn’t something you’d want to be trading a protein shake for. When news came in about Carb Killa and the fact that it is Grenade’s turn at a more traditional protein snack we were instantly interested. The brand’s promotional pictures only fueled that interest as despite being called Carb Killa the product really looked like it was the opposite. When you finally see the bar as we have, you’ll quickly realize Grenade aren’t using any special lighting or camera tricks to make Carb Killa more delicious than it does. The bar actually looks exactly like it’s pictures, and we can honestly say tastes as good as it looks.
The attractive chocolate layer of Grenade’s Carb Killa is where it all starts being surprisingly thick. Despite what most of its competitors are like the chocolate does also taste like the real thing. The official title of Carb Killa’s one flavor is caramel chaos, which is what we feel amplifies the chocolate wrapped around the bar. Once you get past that chocolate layer or depending on how well the bar’s been taken care of it will come with the outer layer. You are treated to a very rich caramel that boosts the belief that the chocolate is real. Separately the two tastes probably wouldn’t be as convincing. Together however the smooth caramel increases the chocolate’s sweetness, creating a very candy bar like beginning. The reason we say beginning is because even though the chocolate and caramel are incredible and definitely the highlight of Carb Killa, the inside of the bar does mix things up.
Once you get through the convincing chocolate and caramel layer you are left with what we can only describe as a cookies and cream combination. In most protein bars where cookies and cream is said to be the focus, the cookies are always easy to spot. As for the cream side of the supplement, it’s a little more difficult to pick up on as a product’s consistency most of the time trumps a weak vanilla or cream like center. In the case of Grenade’s Carb Killa the story is much the same. You can’t quite tell what the middle is meant to taste like, but the bar’s “crunchy crispies” definitely have you thinking cookies and cream. It is also worth mentioning that the crispies are really just crispies adding to the experience by essentially being what they’re called. Don’t expect them to alter to the flavor in any way, they mainly just add a bit more excitement to the bar. As interesting as the center gets and as unique as it makes Carb Killa, you’ll only be able to experience it after the chocolate and caramel dies out. Early on you’ll barely notice the middle section or even the crispies as that chaotic chocolate and caramel combination really does steal the show.
Carb Killa Review final words
In short Grenade Carb Killa is one of the best protein bars on the market. While the brand’s original high protein snack Reload, may not have been a great demonstration of their skills in the kitchen. Grenade’s Carb Killa delivers a rare candy bar like experience that as mentioned in the beginning has been designed with macros in mind. Per bar Carb killa gives you 23g of protein, a low 13.5g of carbs with 1.4g of that sugar, rounding out with a total of 214 calories. While those numbers can be beaten by a lot of brands, when compared to bars that give you that candy bar sensation the list drops to about zero. Of all the bars we’ve tried there is only one that compares to Grenade’s Carb Killa and that is MuscleMed’s Carnivor Bar. Compared to that Carb Killa wins hands down, which if you’ve tried MuscleMed’s Carnivor Bar you’ll know that means a lot.
