Select Protein is Physique Enhancing Science’s first entry into the competitive protein powder market. The supplement first hit shelves late last year in December and has since gone on to win the hearts of many protein enthusiasts. It took us a while to get our hands on the product. However we finally purchased a 2lb 27 serving tub of Select, deciding to take a risk and go with the one odd flavor of the menu, snickerdoodle. We have now after throwing back about 13 or so shakes of the supplement, had enough experience with the surprising little taste to review it, and put it on your list of protein powders to purchase.
First things first we should point out that PES Select is free of amino spiking suspicion. It is actually one of the few protein powders to make a name for itself as a clean formula. The product lists 24g of protein per serving compromised of milk protein isolate (casein and whey protein) and whey protein concentrate. PES also promote a number of highlights for the supplement listing it’s powerful addition of PepForm leucine, low fat and carbohydrate counts, as well as ‘0 Protein Tricks’ supporting it’s spike free cause. One of the big issues today is indeed finding a protein powder that gives you exactly what it says on the label. So you are already half way there just by deciding on PES’s reliable and highly respected Select Protein.
The second thing that sells a protein powder, after you figure out whether or not it’s true to it’s label, is taste. Select does have three flavors on it’s menu with milk chocolate, cookies ‘n’ cream and the option we went with snickerdoodle. The main reason we decided to go with the non-traditional was purely because if PES could deliver on a difficult taste. It would be good to assume chocolate and cookies were just as good, if not better.
If we were to put a number to it, Select snickerdoodle would be getting a ten out of ten. While cinnamon like flavors are not a regular thing for us, the PES effort left us wondering why it took so long to catch on to the Select craze. The experience all starts with the smell, as with all great tasting protein powders. Where it wafts right out of the tub and into your nose the second you crack it open, creating an almost immediate rush of hunger. The crave creating flavor goes right from scent to taste, as the moment it hits your mouth you actually feel like your drinking blended up snickerdoodle cookie with milk. The flavor has this incredibly thick and satisfying consistency that only gets better and smoother the less you dilute it.
As for the taste, the product combines a soothing cookie dough like base with the sweetness of cinnamon sugar. While it’s comparison to an actual snicklerdoodle cookie will depend on your own experience and opinion. We feel it is probably the closest thing you are going to get to the sugar cookie when it comes to protein powders. If we were to break it down, the smooth dough flavoring is slightly more dominant than the cinnamon portion, the thing responsible for the supplement’s seductive scent. With that said the more the Select option is diluted, the less dominating the dough taste becomes. Making the product a much sweeter treat when measured out to around 300ml or more per scoop. Mixing it with a little more liquid will of course see it lose it’s thickshake like consistency. Essentially leaving you to figure out and customize your own preferred balance of sweetness and thickness.
Overall as mentioned PES snickerdoodle Select takes a 10 out of 10 in the flavoring department from us. We knew we would be getting into the business of cinnamon with the variant. However we didn’t know the brand had put together something that is likely going to make all other cinnamon efforts seem inferior. The taste packs the perfect amount of sweetness and thickness, more than enough to get you excited for your protein window. Earlier we said we went with snickerdoodle, assuming that if PES did it well, Select’s chocolate and cookies would be guaranteed hits. We can now definitely say that if they are even half as good as snickerdoodle you won’t be disappointed.
